Field Trips
While Hong Kong is well-known as an international financial centre, many people do not realise that it has remarkably rich biodiversity and a natural terrain with diverse habitats close to the highly urbanized city. The local organizer of 17DSBS has arranged three guided field trips in the afternoon of 15 January to picturesque destinations in Hong Kong for the 17DSBS participants to appreciate the natural beauty of the city. These include the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, designated as one of the first IUGS (International Union of Geological Sciences) Geological Heritage Sites, the Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park, home to rich and diverse coral communities, and the Hong Kong Wetland Park, a world-class conservation, education, and tourism facility.
Quotation: 50 visitors per trip
Booking: Please book and pay for your field trip during the registration. Each participants can only pick up one field trip. First come, first served. Once the quota is full, the booking will be closed.
The price will cover: round-trip bus fee, interpretation by a tourist guide, entrance ticket and other fee (if necessary).
Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark
The Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark is a designated geopark in Hong Kong, China, recognized for its outstanding geological features, natural beauty, and cultural heritage. Spanning 50 square kilometers, the geopark showcases breathtaking volcanic landscapes, including hexagonal volcanic columns, sea caves, and stacks, formed around 140 million years ago. Additionally, it highlights diverse sedimentary rock formations and features attractions such as the High Island Reservoir and ancient rock carvings. The Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark is a must-visit destination where nature enthusiasts and culture seekers can explore the unique geological wonders and rich heritage of the region. In this field trip, we will visit the High Island Reservoir East Dam with the globally rare rhyolitic volcanic hexagonal rock columns.
Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park
Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park, located north of the Sai Kung West Country Park, is one of the first batch of Marine Parks established in Hong Kong. Hoi Ha Wan is a sheltered bay and one of the best sea areas in Hong Kong with good water quality and diverse marine lives. Coral communities in Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park is most famous, in terms of species diversity and richness. Mangroves and various marine organisms are also recorded in Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park. The field trip includes visits to the Hoi Ha Visitor Cente of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, Hong Kong SAR Government, and the Jockey Club HSBC WWF-HK Hoi Ha Marine Life Centre.
Hong Kong Wetland Park
The Hong Kong Wetland Park is a 60-hectare ecological park, and it serves as a conservation, education, and recreational hub. The park showcases the region's diverse wetland ecosystem, attracting visitors with its rich biodiversity and offering interactive exhibitions, outdoor habitats, guided tours, and recreational facilities. It is a haven for nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and researchers, providing a unique opportunity to learn about wetland conservation and enjoy the natural surroundings.
